National Defence Academy

NDA FOUNDATION

NDA Selection Method Details

The NDA (National Defence Academy) selection process is a rigorous and highly competitive process that involves several stages. Here are the various stages involved in the NDA selection process:

  • Written Examination:

The first stage of the selection process is a written examination. The exam consists of two papers, Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). The Mathematics paper is of 300 marks, and the GAT paper is of 600 marks. The written examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

  • SSB Interview:
  • Candidates who clear the written examination are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview. The SSB interview is a five-day process that evaluates a candidate's personality, intelligence, and potential to be an officer in the armed forces. The SSB interview consists of various tests such as the Psychological Test, Group Task, and Interview.

  • Medical Examination:
  • Candidates who clear the SSB interview are required to undergo a medical examination to ensure they are medically fit to serve in the armed forces.

  • Merit List:
  • The final merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in the written examination, SSB interview, and medical examination.

  • Training:
  • Candidates who make it to the final merit list are selected for training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) located in Khadakwasla, Pune. The training at NDA is for three years and includes military training, academics, and physical training.

  • The NDA selection process is a highly competitive process that evaluates a candidate's physical and mental capabilities to serve as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces.

    Admission to the above courses will be made on the basis of the results of the written examination conducted by the commission and followed by intelligence and personality test by the Service Selection Board.

    Educational qualification for appearing in Examination:

    (i) For Army wing of National Defence Academy: -12th class pass of the 10+2 pattern of school education.

    (ii) For Air force and Naval Wings of NDA and for the 10+2 cadet entry scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: – 12th class pass of the 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics No minimum percentage required


    Age limits

    16½ years to 19½ years

    Candidates who are appearing in the 12th class under the 10+2 pattern of school education can also apply for the examination.

    Examination Scheme and NDA selection Process

    Written Examination

    • Paper I

      Mathematics - 300 marks (120 questions) duration of exam is 2½ Hours

    • Paper II

      General Ability Test - 600 marks (150 questions) duration of exam is 2½ Hours

    Interview

    SSB Interview: 900 Marks.
    Papers of all subjects will consist of objective type questions only.

    Syllabus and question paper pattern for NDA Selection:

    Paper I, Mathematics (Questions-120, Max. Marks -300)
    Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of two and three dimensions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability.

    Paper II, General Ability Test (Questions-150, Max. Marks -600)
    General Ability Test consists two parts

    Part-A – English (Questions-50, Maximum Marks-200)
    Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text to test the candidate’s proficiency in English e.g. Spotting errors, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks, antonyms, selecting words in a passage, comprehension Passages etc.

    Part ‘B’ – General Knowledge (Questions-100, Maximum Marks-400)
    History , Politics, Geography, General Science, Physics, Chemistry , Biology, Current affair Books, Sports.

    Intelligence and personality Test for NDA selection

    Verbal and non-verbal tests, group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects.
    All these tests are intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate, his social traits and interests in current affairs.
