Combined Defence Services

The CDS (Combined Defence Services Examination), is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers Training Academy. The CDS exam process includes the following stages:


  1. Online registration:
  2. Candidates must register online on the UPSC website during the registration period.

  3. Admit card:
  4. The UPSC will release the admit card for the written exam a few weeks before the exam date.

  5. Written exam:
  6. The CDS written exam is conducted in two stages:
  7. a. For Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy, the written exam comprises three papers: English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics.
  8. b. For Officers Training Academy, the written exam comprises two papers: English and General Knowledge.
  9. SSB interview:
  10. Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, which is conducted over a period of five days. The SSB interview consists of various tests such as psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interview.

  11. Medical examination:
  12. Candidates who clear the SSB interview are required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the Armed Forces Medical Services.

  13. Merit list:
  14. A merit list is prepared based on the candidate's performance in the written exam and SSB interview.

  15. Training:
  16. Candidates who make it to the merit list are admitted to the respective academies for training.
  17. The CDS exam is a highly competitive exam and requires dedicated preparation. Candidates can refer to the official UPSC website and previous year's question papers for guidance on how to prepare for the exam.

  18. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS)

    The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is carried out twice a year by the Union Civil Service Council for admission to the Indian Military Academy, the Indian Naval Academy, and the Indian Air Force Academy. The review notices are typically given in October and June, and exams in February and November are performed respectively. Only unmarried students will undergo the examination. After an assessment by the Services Selection Board (SSB), qualified candidates are accepted into the respective academies.

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT)

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) is an Indian Air Force admission test for applicants that are ready to join Indian Air Force as a Flying, Land (Technical) and Ground (Non-Technical) Commissioned Officer.
